Mexico – 2015 – Sayulita

June 12, 2015 By: Aaron

Our trip to Mexico this year was between March 13 and March 22. We took the chance to spend a few days in Puerto Vallarta before our week long stay in Sayulita with Ana Garcia of La Villa Bonita.

When we first arrived in Mexico we flew into Puerto  Vallarta. We stayed 2 nights here enjoying the weather and food and the comforts of the resort. We met up with Anne and Rich who flew in on Wednesday.

We had the chance to visit the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta and walk along the board walk by the ocean. Got to eat at some good restaurants and see some Humpback Whales off in the bay. Amy and I spent a lot of time down by the pool and beach with a drink in hand.On Sunday we checked out of our hotels and hung out in the Marriott lobby waiting for Rob to show and our other guests to fly in so we could make the trip to Sayulita.Once all parties were in we all headed north to Sayulita. We would be spending the next 7 days with Ana and Rob for a culinary vacation.

This trip would be our second time staying with Ana and Rob and we were all looking forward to enjoying ourselves and eating good food.

This trip with Ana was a bit different than when you visit at her villa in Tepoztlan. For one, in Sayulita you have more free time. The typical day in Sayiluta consisted of eating breakfast around 8:00 – 8:30. Breakfast would mostly be yogurt, granola and some fruit. A few times there were beans or chilaquiles (you never went hungry). After breakfast we would walk into town to pick up what ever fruits, meat, or other items we needed for lunch and dinner. Once back at the Villa we would all begin prepping and cooking. There were 8 of us total on this trip and Ana does a good job on assigning tasks so that everyone has some sort of participation in the cooking process. There has been a few tips and tricks that I’ve learned from her over our two visits that I still use.

Now this is where the major differences were between the Sayulita trip and when we visited her 3 years ago in Tepoztlan.

In Sayulita we ate 3 meals. A light breakfast, lunch, and dinner (dessert was always had at both locations). In Tepoztlan we had 2 meals with a light snack in between; such as chips and guacamole.

We would finish prepping all the food for both lunch and dinner around 2pm or so. Then we would all sit down and have lunch and about 4 pm we were pretty much done. The rest of the day was for us to enjoy and do things such as go to the beach, the pool, visit town and shop and such. At about 8pm is when we would all reconvene for dinner. Who ever was around at 7/7:30 could also help get the last things in order and start cooking but around 8 we all sat down again to eat.

In Tepoztlan on the other hand, after returning from the village with the day’s groceries we would get about an hour’s rest. At about 11 or so we would start the cooking process. The second meal in Tepoztlan was a much larger, heavier course. We would break for a short while during cooking to make fresh salsa and guacamole and have a few cocktails. Dinner in Tepoztlan would typically be ready around 4:30 or 5 and we would spend the next 2 hours in the outdoor dinner room with a full 360 degree view of the mountains.

If you like to cook, or just love to eat good authentic homemade food, you should look into staying a week with Ana. Good times will be had.

I know Ana and Rob will be doing a 3rd location, and we’re hoping in about 2 years that we get the chance to revisit with them again for another great adventure.

Here’s a photo dump of the pictures from our trip. There’s a lot of photos here.
